A healthy plate with Georgian products: what to put every day

A healthy diet does not require foreign products. See how to build a balanced plate with beans, vegetables, protein and moderate bread.

Eating healthy often sounds like it requires exotic ingredients, complicated recipes, and perfect discipline. In fact, a balanced plate is easily filled with everyday Georgian products. The idea is not to remove traditional dishes. The idea is to create a combination on your plate that helps with hunger, energy and regularity.

The best starting formula is:

  1. ცილა;
  2. ბოსტნეული ან ხილი;
  3. ენერგიის წყარო — მარცვლეული, კარტოფილი, პური ან სხვა ნახშირწყალი;

This is not a diet. It is a structure that makes the choice easier.

Protein sources can be eggs, chicken, fish, cottage cheese, sour cream, beans, lentils or almonds/walnuts as an additional element. Vegetables can be cucumber-tomatoes, greens, cabbage, eggplant, broccoli, carrots or seasonal salad. Carbohydrates can be buckwheat, rice, potatoes, corn or bread.

For example:

  • ლობიო + მწვანე სალათი + მჭადი მცირე პორციით;
  • კვერცხი + კიტრი-tomatoes + მთლიანი პური;
  • თევზი + ბოსტნეული + კარტოფილი;

If you don't want to count calories, use the size of your hand: protein about the size of a palm, vegetables two handfuls, carbohydrates one handful, fat the size of a thumb or a little walnut/oil. It's not an exact science, but it works in everyday life.

The goal at the table is not perfect control. Start with vegetables and protein, then choose a dish or two that you want the most. You don't have to try everything just because it's lying around. If you eat khinkal, you can reduce other heavy meals. If khachapuri is the main choice, add a side salad.

Have a few "collection" products at home:

  • კვერცხი;
  • მაწონი ან ხაჭო;
  • ლობიო/ოსპი;
  • გაყინული ან სეზონური ბოსტნეული;
  • ერთი მარცვლეული;
  • ხილი;

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers

Is healthy eating necessarily expensive?

No. Beans, lentils, eggs, seasonal vegetables, sourdough and whole grains are often very practical and affordable choices.

Should I remove the bread?

Not necessarily. Portion, type and overall plate are more important. Whole grain breads and moderate amounts work well for many people.

Khachapuri and khinkali are no longer possible at all?

Ban is not necessary. What matters is frequency, portion size, and what your meals look like throughout the week.
