What to eat before and after training

Simple principles of pre- and post-workout nutrition: timing, protein, carbohydrates, fluid, and everyday foods.

Nutrition around exercise is often presented as overly complicated. In most cases, overall nutrition for the day, sufficient energy, and regular protein intake determine results — not a "magic window" of a few minutes. Time is still a useful tool: well-chosen nutrition keeps you energized and makes recovery easier.

If you eat a full meal two to three hours before your workout, it can include a protein source, carbohydrates, and moderate vegetables. For example:

  • ქათამი ან ლობიო, წიწიბურა და სალათი;
  • კვერცხი, პური და ბოსტნეული;
  • იოგურტი, შვრია და ხილი;

Fatty, very spicy or large amounts of food too close to exercise make some people uncomfortable. If you only have 30-60 minutes, choose a small and familiar snack: a banana, yogurt, a piece of bread with cottage cheese, or another easily digestible option.

Do not try a new product for the first time before an important competition or a particularly hard workout.

Build the next meal of the session around protein and carbohydrates. Protein helps the muscle recovery process, and carbohydrates are especially important if the session has been long or if you're training later in the day.

Practical examples are:

  • თევზი, კარტოფილი და ბოსტნეული;
  • ქათამი, ბრინჯი ან წიწიბურა და სალათი;
  • ლობიო, პური და ბოსტნეული;
  • იოგურტი ან ხაჭო, ხილი და შვრია;

Protein powder is not necessary. It is only a convenient product when ordinary food does not suit you. When choosing a supplement, check the composition and reliability.

Start the day normally hydrated. Thirst, ambient temperature, perspiration and duration of the session change the need. Water is often enough for short and moderate exercise. Electrolytes can become important during activity that is very long, intense, or in a hot environment, but there is no universal amount for everyone.

Urine color is only a rough guide and is not a medical test. Drinking too much water by force is not the goal either.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers

Is it possible to exercise on an empty stomach?

Some people tolerate a light session well, others lack energy. The choice depends on the duration of the session, the intensity and how you feel; Exercising on an empty stomach does not guarantee better results by itself.

Is a protein shake necessary?

No. You can get protein with regular food. A shake is only a convenient option when a full meal is practically impossible.

How fast should I eat after a workout?

For most people, it is the main meal of the day. If you eat normally in a few hours, there is no need to worry about the minutes; For long or frequent sessions, planning is more important.
